Cape Breton Hiking Day 1

Here is my catch up!  Yes I am extremely back logged but I am determined to not let this blog lay to waste.  So previously I'd introduced my tour mate, and here is a brief note on some of the hike that we took together (with me lagging behind seriously).  Our first stop was at Park Falls. It's a easy walk without my stick, slowly but surely, I made it down to the falls.

We took a short trip to the Atlantic store to get our groceries for the next 3 days after deciding on a simple menu for 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners.  Each share was $35 but it was nothing fancy.  We had lunch at a park before entering Cape Breton.  Lunch was the usual nan, humus, tzatziki (Greek cucumber yogurt), candied salmon (finally found it in the store at Sobeys), salami, cheese and veg.  I was a good lunch as I was hungry.  Thereafter was on to Myers Boyle Fall.

The highlight of the day was a hike to Salt Mountain.  From the write up Salt Mountain was a 4/5 hiking trail.  I am all jittery, I have never done hiking in my life and I was not sure if I could do this.  The initial walk before we got to the hiking trail, got me panting already.  Nevertheless I push on with the group way ahead of me.  If I make it, I make it.  The hiking stick was a saver, and before long, I did get to the top.  Needless to say, I prayed very hard too, asking God to give me the strength to finish the hike.  When I got to the top, it was indeed heavenly and a joy.  To be able to look out from Salt Mountain was overwhelming.

As some one wrote....Salt Mountain, also known as Whycocomagh Provincial Park) Whycocomagh, meaning “Head of the Waters” in Mi’kmaq, houses one of the nicest mountaintop views on the Island. Salt Mountain is a short hike but should not be mistaken for a simple stroll in the woods. Its steep climb will take the breath away from even the most seasoned of hikers. And if the hike itself doesn’t, I promise the view at the top wil

It was a short trip to our hostel, Bear on the Lake.  It was a nice hostel with boys and gals room.  I decided to take a quick shower, as the water for the pasta will take a long time to boil.  Then to my surprise, no shampoo and soap provided so I asked Mark, how come no shampoo and soap?  Hello, you are staying in a hostel and you need to bring your own.  Oh, really? I have never stayed in a hostel before and it was not listed as things to bring.   Mark was nice enough to take me out to get the essentials.

The spaghetti was good (without meat) and the garlic bread was better (yeah, I need to get one too).  We had lots of salad cut, enough for tomorrow lunch too.  After that I had a game of scrabble with Sue.  The bed was not very comfortable but I slept nevertheless.
